Auckland Jam 2010 :: 24th April

Where : Quay Park (off Mahuhu Crescent)
When : Saturday 24th April at 11:00am

This is the first Family Jam in what I hope will be an annual event in Auckland, getting bigger and bigger with every year.
The point of this event is to bring everybody together in the community to what has in the past been diminished through labels and stereotypes, and show everybody that in the end we're all just practising movement in one form or another.

Also, bring some change, as we will be heading over to Devonport to end the jam at the end of the day

If anybody needs to know anything at all, travel, how to get to Quay Park etc
Just give me a call or a text!

Hope to see everybody there for what will be a huge step for the Auckland Movement Community!

mean, get the ball rolling. main spots for me would be quay park, st patricks square (next to the church), albert park, uni quad and surronding blocks, and freyburg square and areas close to that. most should be able to hold at least 30 people, possibly more. these also seem appropiate for diversity in movement and should meet the needs of everyone, which is why i left gloria jeans out.
Random Kid: Hey do u guys do all those flips and stuff?!
Maika: yea... thats us
Random Kid: Show us a trick!!
Maika: *does spliting thumb trick* there you go

I think we're coming into a long-weekend drought. Also winter. So my advice would be to aim for not too long after Easter and have an wet-weather alternative if possible. Is there any way we could get hold of a gym for a day or afternoon- or even a school hall or warehouse or something? From what I gather most gyms have only small time slots where they're open to joe public.

You could certainly spend a few hours in Devonport: North Head, local schools etc. Plenty of beaches, too.

That's a good point..weather wise, it could be pretty unreliable, so will definitely try organize some sort of gym access, i know a few of the coaches around so i'm sure I could suss something out..
But we'll try keep positive, because there is definitely some sick stuff out there in the city.
But should definitely aim for as early as possible while the weather is on our side.
Perhaps people could start posting what dates they think would be good for the jam?

At the moment the dates that stick out the most to me would be either April 3rd or April 10th
I personally reckon one day would be best, I'm just saying this as this way we would be able to be the best we can and not be completely knackered for any following days, just a suggestion, let me know what you guys think, am thinking of running this Jam a little bit more differently that how others have gone down in NZ thus far, really give Auckland that oomph factor everybody's been waiting for ;)

Okay, so far we have these spots mentioned..bearing in mind guys we will be catering for everybody at the event, so there will be a huge diversity between locations and spots, so no need to fret, if you have any other suggestions, please add! :)

Quay park
Gloria Jeans
St Patrick's Square
Albert Park
Uni and AUT
Freyburg square
Devonport
Auckland Domain Area
Plenty of beaches

April 3rd is good because it's Easter weekend, and bad for the same reason: lots of people have stuff on (including me). The week after- the tenth- is also the weekend of Christchurch's Castle Hill jam, but because of location there's probably not too many people for whom that would clash. Aside from that, both dates are as good as any.

One day could work well, it all depends on how you arrange it. Also if out-of-towners are coming they'll either have to come on the Friday night or the Saturday morning, which generally means they aren't ready to start until lunchtime; and then they have to go again in the evening, cutting your time short. But it's no big deal, and again it depends on what you're planning whether it's a problem or not.

Keen to hear what you've got planned.

Hrmm, okay, double checking the calendar, it looks as though the first two weekends of April aren't really going to be the best for everybody, how would everybody feel about the Jam being April the 20th (Saturday)?

Also, gives us a chance to refine every little detail about the Jam.

I have a few thoughts that have been playing in my head for a while now
-One is that everybody is responsible for their own warming up?
-Two is that the locations in Auckland can easily hold more than enough people so we can stay in a huge group and jam out together rather than splitting off?
Thoughts everybody?

For this event to run smoothly, we would have to know what everybody would like to see at the jam, and that can be in the way of; Locations, Teaching, Showcasing etc..anything!

Just post it here, and we'll no doubt work it in!
I think it would be a good idea to have something a bit different than what we have had at the previous jams in N.Z that have gone off successfully, step it up another notch and bring something new to the table!

Ideas, ideas and ideas! :)
Post, post, POST!

Just a note - Auckland is definitely more of a Freerunning orientated community, and that's not to say that traceurs aren't around, because they are, though I think everybody from Auckland would agree it is more Freerunning dominant, so yes there will be more freerunners than traceurs at the jam, but hence why It's just the 'Auckland Jam' no labelling strictly parkour or freerunning, we're completely open to anything and everything! Movement is movement, it's all about meeting everybody and having an awesome day out with your extended family ;)

Easter just became slightly more available, but the other considerations still stand.

What's the main, overarching goal of this event? Is it to improve our skills through teaching each other? Is it to push our limits, see what we're capable of? Is it simply to get people talking and relating? Is it to promote our scene; and if so, who is the target audience? Now of course it's all these things and more, but if you nail down the one overarching goal then I think a lot of questions will start answering themselves.

I think that the social aspect of it may well be the pertinent part, so how do we promote such an environment?

As you said it's all these things and more, but I suppose the main goal for the event would be to promote our scene, people are still yet to see what Auckland is really capable of and I think a jam would be the best way to show it in the best light possible, and at this jam is where we can push our limits, get people talking etc ..
Not only promoting to the other communities around New Zealand, but also the public who are always interested in what we're doing
