CryptoZoo

Postby Max on Wed May 13, 2009 9:59 am

CryptoZoo is a new game about chasing weird animals through a city lol. Cool thing is that this is in a small way inspired by NZ parkour! We had Jane McGonigal out with us for some parkour when she was in Wellington 8-).

Check out this video for some similarities to basic parkour, and also just to see people having fun with movement: http://cryptozoo.ning.com/video/video/s ... ideo%3A160

Who created CryptoZoo?

CryptoZoo is a non-commercial, indie game created by Jane McGonigal for the American Heart Association. The game is part of an AHA initiative in collaboration with the Institute for the Future.

What inspired the CryptoZoo game?

CryptoZoo is about inventing the future of physical activity, about making play and gaming a bigger part of how we take care of ourselves.

The American Heart Association in collaboration with Institute for the Future recognized that we can re-invent physical activity with the help of online games and social media. Games -– especially when they get you moving in the real world -- can be good for you, and the more we play together, the better.

CrytpoZoo is a proof-of-concept game, a way for us to show what physical activity could (and we think, should) be like in the future: more fun, more social, and better integrated with our everyday lives.

It would be awesome to get some events happening for this game in NZ ;). These sort of games are really the community makes up rules as the game evolves, so there could be all sorts of imaginative animals and routes we have to 'chase' that could be added to a parkour training session.

Haha, looks like mean fun. So do you have to memorise all the different kind of footprints though? How does it work exactly, I couldn't find any clear rule page or anything. Maybe I didn't look hard enough...

I watched a couple of the vids and I'm not entirely sure what the goal is. Whatever it is, it seems to be an attempt to get people out and exercising in a fun environment, so good on them for that. I also found this linked from her website:

These type of games are community driven so the rules get made up as it goes along. I think :? . It's all kind of web 2.0ish. I have no idea what you'd classify these type of games as. Will be awesome if it gets more people moving.
